Writing that still sounds like you.

Writing is ChatGPT's most-used job and its most misused one. The difference between generic AI slop and fast, good writing that sounds like you is a set of workflows — here they are.

01 The zero draft

The blank page is the most expensive part of writing. Kill it: dump everything you know as messy notes — fragments, bullets, voice-memo transcript, whatever — and ask ChatGPT to "turn this into a rough first draft; keep my phrasings where they're good." That last clause matters: it seeds the draft with your actual voice instead of the model's defaults.

02 Rewrite surgically, not wholesale

"Make it better" produces beige. Name the single dimension you want moved:

Instead ofSay
"Improve this""Cut 40% without losing the warning in paragraph two"
"Make it professional""Same content, but confident instead of apologetic"
"Punch it up""Give me three alternative opening lines, each with a different energy"
"Fix the tone""Reader is annoyed and skimming. Rewrite so the key ask survives a 10-second read"

03 Teach it your voice once

Collect three to five things you've written that sound like you on a good day. Paste them in and ask: "Describe this writer's voice as a style guide — rhythm, vocabulary, what they never do." Save that style guide in your custom instructions or a writing Project. From then on, "write it in my voice" means something.

The slop test

Before sending anything ChatGPT helped write, scan for its tells: "delve," "furthermore," "it's important to note," rule-of-three sentences everywhere, em-dash confetti, a suspiciously balanced closing paragraph. If you spot two or more, one instruction fixes it: "Rewrite plainly. Short sentences. No filler phrases."

04 The review pass you're not using

ChatGPT is a better editor than writer. Before anything important goes out, run: "Read this as [the actual recipient]. What lands badly? What's unclear? What question will they immediately ask?" This catches the thing you can't see — how it reads to someone who isn't you. For high-stakes messages, also ask: "What's the least charitable reading of this?"

05 Where to draw the line

Some writing is the relationship: condolences, real apologies, the note that only counts if it cost you something. Draft those yourself. Use the machine to check clarity if you want — but the words should be yours. Knowing where this line sits is part of being good at this.

Try it now

Take something you sent last week. Run the review pass on it as the recipient. Notice what it catches that you didn't.

This week's challenge

Build your voice guide this week: three writing samples in, style guide out, saved where every future chat can use it. Then write one real piece with 'in my voice' and send the version you edited. Ask someone who knows your writing if they can tell. If they can't — that's the whole game.
