Memory & styles: continuity that compounds.
The difference between a tool and a colleague is that a colleague remembers. Claude's memory and styles give you that continuity — deliberately configured, it stops being a fresh intern every morning.
01 The three layers of 'knowing you'
| Layer | Scope | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Profile & preferences | Everything | Who you are, how you like answers — the two-sentence brief |
| Memory | Across conversations | Facts that accumulate: your projects, your people, your standing decisions |
| Projects | One workstream | Files + instructions for a specific client, deal, or deliverable (setup lesson) |
Most people configure none of these and then re-explain themselves forever. Configure all three once and every conversation starts warm.
02 Memory, managed like an asset
03 Styles: stop repeating 'shorter'
Styles set the default shape of responses — concise versus explanatory versus formal, or a custom one built from your own writing samples. The custom route is the sleeper: feed it three good samples, and 'write it my way' becomes the default rather than a request. Pair with the voice-guide workflow and your drafts arrive pre-fitted.
Same metric as every personalization system: the first draft should be usable. Track your corrections for a week — any fix you make twice becomes a preference, a memory entry, or a style adjustment that day. Repeated corrections are configuration debt.
04 The compounding effect
Week one, this feels like setup chores. Month three, it's the reason your Claude produces noticeably better work than a colleague's fresh account — same model, different accumulated context. Personalization is the moat nobody can copy from you, because it IS you.
Run the audit ("what do you remember about me?"), fix what's wrong, seed five durable facts, and set your base style. Twenty minutes to stop being a stranger.

The one-week first-draft ledger: every Claude output, mark usable-as-is or needed-the-usual-fix — and promote every repeated fix into memory, preferences, or style the same day. Friday's ledger is your proof the compounding started.
