Grok's maker is now SpaceXAI.

If you visited x.ai this month and did a double-take at the header — "SpaceXAI, creators of Grok" — you're caught up on the branding but not the story. The company behind Grok was acquired by SpaceX back in February; July 2026 is when the public-facing rebrand landed. Here's the timeline, what actually changes for you (very little), and the ship list from a very busy summer.

01 The timeline, straight

DateWhat happened
Feb 2, 2026SpaceX announces it has acquired xAI ("xAI joins SpaceX")
Spring 2026Business as usual under the xAI name — Grok Build, Skills, Connectors, voice APIs all ship
July 2026The public rebrand: the website, news, and social presence switch to SpaceXAI
Naming nuance: the legal entity is still "xAI Corp" (check any page footer), the API console still lives at console.x.ai, and the docs still say x.ai. "SpaceXAI" is the consumer-facing brand. Expect a messy year of both names appearing — including in our own lessons where the docs still say xAI.

02 What changes for you

Today: nothing breaks. grok.com works, the iOS/Android apps update normally, Grok on X is unchanged, your SuperGrok or Premium+ subscription carries over, and the API endpoints are untouched. This is a brand change, not a platform migration — no action required.

The longer game is worth understanding, though. SpaceX owning a frontier AI lab means Grok's compute story (the Colossus supercomputers) and its funding now sit inside one of the world's most aggressive engineering companies. That's the bull case. The judgment layer this track always teaches still applies: the data dials and honest assessment don't change because the logo did.

03 The summer ship list you actually care about

Rebrand aside, the ship cadence has been relentless. The ones that matter for daily use:

ShippedWhat it isWhy care
Jul 621 new flagship voices, multilingual, plus improved naturalness for the original fiveVoice chat and TTS jumped in quality — revisit the voice lesson
Jul 1Voice Agent Builder (beta) — no-code voice agents with telephony, tools, guardrailsProduction voice bots without engineering — big for small businesses
Jun 25Interactive Brokers × Grok market explorationFinance workflows get live-data grounding (verify before trading — always)
Jun 22/goal in Grok Build — autonomous work toward a goal with a live checklistThe agentic coding loop, visible
Jun 16-18Word & PowerPoint add-ins, Grok on Databricks and Amazon BedrockThe Office add-ins have their own lesson

04 The honest read

Two things are true at once. Grok is shipping faster than any other frontier lab right now — voices, agents, integrations, add-ins, week after week. And it still has the loosest product culture in frontier AI, which is exactly why this track pairs every capability lesson with a judgment layer. A rocket company's ambition doesn't change either fact. Use the firehose; keep the evidence discipline.

Five-minute check

Open your Grok data-sharing settings today (grok.com → Settings → Data). Ownership changes are precisely when quiet policy updates happen — this one took about five months to reach the logo. Confirm your training-data dials are where you set them, and skim the privacy policy's "last updated" date while you're there.

What you can do now

  • Update your mental model: SpaceXAI = the brand, xAI Corp = the company, Grok = the product
  • Change nothing in your workflows — apps, subscriptions, and API all carry over
  • Try the new voices if you use voice mode — the quality jump is real
  • Re-check your data-sharing dials post-acquisition
