From prompt to grid, and what to do next.
Every Midjourney session is the same loop. Learn to read the grid and use the buttons well, and you will get to a great image far faster.
01The core loop
- Open Create and write a clear, specific prompt — subject first, then style and detail.
- Press enter; Midjourney returns a grid of four takes on your prompt.
- Pick the strongest and Upscale it for a full-resolution version.
- Want a different direction? Use Variations (close riffs) or Reroll (four fresh takes).
02How to read the grid
The four images are not "better and worse" — they are different interpretations. Look for the one closest to your intent in composition and mood, not just polish. That is the one worth upscaling or varying, because the model is closest to understanding you there.
Variations vs Reroll
Variations stay near the image you picked — small changes, same idea. Reroll throws out four brand-new interpretations of the prompt. Vary when you are close; reroll when none of the four landed.
Do not over-prompt on the first try. Start simple, see what the model does, then add detail. A wall of adjectives up front often produces a muddier image than a clean prompt you refine.
Frequently asked
Midjourney — your questions, answered
Why does Midjourney give me four images?
The grid shows four different interpretations of your prompt, not four quality levels. Pick the one closest to your intended composition and mood, then upscale or vary it.
What is the difference between Variations and Reroll?
Variations make small changes near the image you selected; Reroll generates four entirely new takes on the same prompt. Vary when you are close, reroll when none landed.
How do I get a full-resolution image?
Upscale the grid image you like — that produces the high-resolution version you can download.
Should I write a long prompt or a short one to start?
Start short and specific, see what the model does, then add detail. Over-prompting up front often produces a muddier result.
