The AI already on your phone — no new gadgets needed.
Here is a nice surprise: if you have a smartphone, you very likely already have an AI helper in your pocket. Nothing to buy, nothing to install. Let’s find it and say hello.
The ideaYour phone has a built-in helper
On an iPhone, it is called Siri. On most other phones, it is the Google Assistant (sometimes called Gemini). You talk to it out loud, and it answers out loud — no typing needed. It can answer questions, set reminders, make calls, and send texts for you.
Speaking to your phone can feel silly the first time. That passes quickly — and it is much easier than hunting for tiny buttons.
Step 1Wake it up
On an iPhone, press and hold the button on the right side (or say "Hey Siri"). On most Androids, press and hold the home button or say "Hey Google." You will hear a little chime — that means it is listening.
Step 2Ask for something useful
Start with everyday things: "Call my daughter." "What time is it in Arizona?" "Remind me to water the plants every Tuesday." "Read me my last text message." If it mishears you, just try again — it does not mind.
Step 3Know the difference
The voice assistant is wonderful for quick tasks. For longer help — writing a letter, explaining something confusing, checking a suspicious message — the chat helpers you met in the first lesson (like ChatGPT) are the better tool. You now have both kinds in your toolbox.
Your turn
Three little wins with the helper on your phone:
- Wake it up and ask about tomorrow’s weather.
- Have it set one reminder you actually need.
- Ask it one fun question — anything you are curious about.
What you can do now
- Wake up the assistant on your own phone
- Ask questions and set reminders by voice
- Send a text or make a call hands-free
- Know when to use voice vs. a chat helper
