OpenAI just built a free AI school for small businesses.
On July 21, OpenAI launched the ChatGPT for small business program — free webinars, in-person training events across the US, ready-to-use guides, and partner deals, all aimed at owners who wear every hat: marketer, accountant, salesperson, operator. There's no new product here and nothing to buy. It's a training push built around ChatGPT Work, and if you run a small business — a shop, a trade, a studio, a startup — there's real free value worth grabbing. Here's what's actually in it, and how to use it without getting sold to.
In one line: OpenAI is betting that the thing keeping small businesses off AI isn't price — it's training. So they're giving the training away to win the customer.

OpenAI's numbers from last year's Small Business AI Jams — the event series this program grew out of — are the pitch: 78% of participants built a working AI workflow in a single day, and 42% reported saving more than five hours a week. Those are OpenAI's own figures, so hold them loosely — but they match what we see when owners get two focused hours with the right prompts.
Why this fits trades and main-street businesses
One of OpenAI's featured stories is a builder: Kevin English of Keg Built says ChatGPT saved him 10+ hours of data entry on a single 30-page contractor quote — checking cost, quantity, and item numbers while he got other work done. The honest read: this is marketing — good marketing. OpenAI gives away training so your business standardizes on ChatGPT Work and stays subscribed. That doesn't make the training bad; it makes it free. Take the skills, keep your judgment, and remember the webinars will not spend much time on when a cheaper plan (or a different tool) would do.
