OpenAI just built a free AI school for small businesses.

On July 21, OpenAI launched the ChatGPT for small business program — free webinars, in-person training events across the US, ready-to-use guides, and partner deals, all aimed at owners who wear every hat: marketer, accountant, salesperson, operator. There's no new product here and nothing to buy. It's a training push built around ChatGPT Work, and if you run a small business — a shop, a trade, a studio, a startup — there's real free value worth grabbing. Here's what's actually in it, and how to use it without getting sold to.

In one line: OpenAI is betting that the thing keeping small businesses off AI isn't price — it's training. So they're giving the training away to win the customer.

OpenAI's numbers from last year's Small Business AI Jams — the event series this program grew out of — are the pitch: 78% of participants built a working AI workflow in a single day, and 42% reported saving more than five hours a week. Those are OpenAI's own figures, so hold them loosely — but they match what we see when owners get two focused hours with the right prompts.

Why this fits trades and main-street businesses

One of OpenAI's featured stories is a builder: Kevin English of Keg Built says ChatGPT saved him 10+ hours of data entry on a single 30-page contractor quote — checking cost, quantity, and item numbers while he got other work done. That's the pattern we push hard in our trades lessons: the win isn't writing poems, it's paperwork — quotes, estimates, invoices, review responses, supplier emails. This program is one of the first times OpenAI has aimed its own training squarely at that audience instead of at developers and enterprises.

The engine underneath: ChatGPT Work

Everything in the program funnels toward ChatGPT Work, the agent OpenAI shipped on July 9 that takes a goal and comes back with finished documents, sheets, slides, or a live web page. Connected to your email, files, and store, it can draft the newsletter, reconcile the spreadsheet, or build a dashboard that updates itself. It runs on GPT-5.6 on every plan. If you haven't met it yet, start with our lesson — including the usage catch OpenAI doesn't headline: ChatGPT Work: the agent that finishes things.

The honest read: this is marketing — good marketing. OpenAI gives away training so your business standardizes on ChatGPT Work and stays subscribed. That doesn't make the training bad; it makes it free. Take the skills, keep your judgment, and remember the webinars will not spend much time on when a cheaper plan (or a different tool) would do.

Your move this week

Do these in under an hour, total

  • Sign up for program updates on OpenAI's small-business page — it's a simple email form
  • Register for one webinar that matches your actual work (bookkeeping, marketing, or ecommerce)
  • Check the Academy events list for an in-person session near you
  • If you use Shopify, Intuit/QuickBooks, or Wix: look at that partner's skill first — it will map to work you already do
  • Before any webinar, run our ChatGPT Work lesson so you arrive knowing the basics and can ask better questions

This week's challenge

Pick the most repetitive piece of paperwork in your business — the quote, the invoice chase, the weekly social post. Attend one free webinar (or just open ChatGPT Work), and build one workflow for that single task. One task, built once, is how the 42%-who-save-five-hours got there.
