01 What a Skill actually is
Under the hood, a Skill is packaged instructions — a documented procedure Claude pulls in when relevant: "when making slide decks, follow THIS structure; when handling invoices, extract THESE fields." You've seen the idea as prompt libraries and templates; Skills make it automatic — the right recipe loads for the right job without you pasting anything. They power document creation in Cowork, and the same concept serves everyday chat work.
02 Use what exists first
Before building: Claude ships with skills for the common deliverables — polished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs. The practical habit is simply asking for real files: "Build this as an actual Excel file with working formulas" rather than accepting a markdown table. If your plan and surface support it, the skill does the file-format heavy lifting and you get something you can open, edit, and send.
03 When to build your own
The test is the same as every automation: do you repeat it, and does it have rules?
- Your quote format — sections, terms, the disclaimer legal made you add
- Your weekly report — same structure, same tone, same charts
- Your review checklist — the eight things you check on every contract
- Your brand voice — the style guide from the writing lesson, promoted from paste-in to always-on
Building one is describing the procedure clearly, with an example of good output — Claude itself is the best co-author: "Help me turn this checklist into a skill: draft the instructions, then critique them for gaps."
Skills are institutional memory, and institutional memory rots: when your price list, template, or policy changes, the skill updates THAT day. A stale skill produces confidently outdated work in your official format — worse than no skill. Put a quarterly date on reviewing whatever you've installed.
04 The team angle
