V8.2 is the new default: taste, learned.

On July 24, 2026, Midjourney flipped the switch: V8.2 is now the default model for every prompt you run. No flags, no settings, no extra cost. It's a focused update — aesthetics, consistency, and a personalization system that finally rewards all those image ratings you've been clicking. Here's the whole briefing, and the one thing worth doing this week.

What Midjourney says changed:

• Bolder default output. Images should come out "more creative, bold, sophisticated, edgy and fresh" — Midjourney's words. In practice: V8.2 takes bigger aesthetic swings by default.
• A higher floor. The "random situations where you'd get a low quality image" — the one dud in a grid of four — "should be dramatically reduced." For working professionals this is the bigger deal: fewer rerolls, more usable grids.
• Personalization that knows you. Profiles now "understand" your taste much better, especially if you have a large pile of ratings behind them. And building a fresh profile for V8.2 draws from a much larger, improved pool of images than before.

The backstory, briefly: V8.2 spent a month in public testing behind the --preview flag (since June 25) before being promoted to default. If you've been prompting with --preview, you can drop it — you're on V8.2 either way now. Everyone else moved over automatically on July 24.

What to actually do: Midjourney "strongly encourages" trying both your old personalization profiles and a newly created one against V8.2 — the model reads them differently, and the new profile-building pool is better. Run the same prompt three ways: no profile, old profile, fresh profile. Ten minutes, and you'll know which version of your taste V8.2 understands best.
